Inner Rewards

Next week is the fourth week in “Fire” month and we are looking at character building and values.  Our theme is “Inner Rewards”.   It’s all about examining what is truly motivating us to take action and asking ourselves why we are doing the things we’re doing.  Are you doing the things that deeply make you happy?  Are you living for a prize outside yourself or an inner reward?

I’m not talking about momentary gratification.  Sometimes we have to push through the hard work to create a life that genuinely fulfills us.  The most important gauge I’ve found to let me know that the work I’m doing is going to really bring me deep, inner happiness is: does this have benefit beyond me?  I think humans are hard-wired to live for the good of all, so if I notice my work is only benefiting me or those close to me, I know it will not really fulfill me in the long run.

This is the reason we developed the Ambassador Program, and why we are expanding these trainings to teens and adults in January.  We want all our students to have the opportunity to become leaders in the dojo, and in life.  While leadership looks different for everyone, I truly believe we all should learn how to to lead in our own way.  The really rewarding work in life is the kind that helps and guides those who follow in our footsteps.

I’m excited for all students to explore the practice of training for the inner reward of the work through these techniques this week:

  • All ways Ukemi
  • Sweeps and Kicking out legs to throw (higher ranked kids, teens and adults only)
  • Jumonji no Kata (orange belt and below)
  • Uda Gyaku
  • Tanto Kamae and Strike

Remember to mark your calendars yet for Ambassador Training!

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you in the dojo!
