In a world where competition has taken the driver’s seat, Nature Adventures Summer Camp strives to help kids see the power of collaboration. Read on to find out how we weave team work into everything we do.
Our camp accepts kids as young as rising Kindergartners all the way through rising 5th Graders. We make sure to bring the different age groups together throughout the week for valuable experiences of connection and collaboration! All ages begin each day together in our morning circle. At the start of the week, kids learn about a very special part of camp: mentoring. This is an ancient tradition found in many cultures, including the Japanese tradition where our martial art comes from.
The older kids are called “Sempai” and the younger are “Kohai”. Each Sempai gets paired with a Kohai for the week. Though the kids often head off into adventures separated by age group, they have plenty of chances to practice looking out for the younger kids. Whether it’s being a buddy on a trail or checking in if they see their little friend standing shyly on the edge of a game, the Sempai are learning to be leaders and the Kohai are learning the power of community – and getting inspired to someday fill those big kids’ shoes.
Our camp educational experiences are provided through imaginative, interactive adventures in nature. This means that learning takes place as part of a team experience. Whether the kids are diving into the natural world, science, health or wellness, they are working together to uncover the lessons our counselors have crafted for them.
In the above photos, campers work together to create a shelter in the woods near camp, as part of a pretend wilderness expedition.
FOCUS ON SELF-IMPROVEMENT
We can only progress so much when our motivation comes from a drive to be better than others. If we have learned from a young age to discover our deepest reasons for growing and bettering ourselves, our motivation knows no bounds.
In all we do at camp, we encourage the kids to search for that source of intrinsic motivation for self improvement that will carry them throughout their lives. Here, the kids are out on a yoga adventure where our guest instructor leads them to develop their own health and wellness in the way that is best for each child.
