Leadership Lesson: Building Trust

Welcome to the second week of Integrity month!  For our “Power Gem” this week, we are still exploring Truth Power.  Specifically for this week, we’re looking at the power of truth to build trust in our relationships with other.

Growing up, I always learned that trust is the number one, essential ingredient for a successful relationship.  But through my years of personal relationships and working with many different people through teaching classes, I’ve found that the process of building trust can be confusing.  I think the biggest reason for that was summarized by John Gottman when he said, “Trust is build in the smallest of moments”.

In other words, trust is not a prize you get for doing a few grand gestures now and then, but largely disappointing them,  breaking commitments, or hiding the truth of who you are.  Trust is a foundation that is built slowly with many small but valuable stones.  It’s a foundation that can easily crack and must be rebuilt even more carefully than it was first created.

It’s no wonder that this process seems daunting – and why it may be such a difficult thing to really build trust with others.  But it’s also essential to deep and lasting happiness and success in life.  That’s why these lessons are a big part of our program!

This week, we’re tackling the concept of Building Trust in our martial arts classes, our After School program, and our Ambassador Training.  The Ambassador Training is a special leadership and character-focused class for our Black Belt Track students.  These Ambassadors will be bringing their newfound knowledge back with them into the dojo as they take on leadership roles in classes.  We’re also excited to have our student Ambassadors helping us to create and lead the free mini classes that we will be offering at our Open House and Renovation Celebration on Saturday, September 15th!

This week, we’ll also be exploring how we can build trust with our own selves, like through the practice of sticking with a martial arts discipline and always doing our best.  We’ll be jumping into the following techniques:

Mon Tues Wed Thurs Fri

Technique 1 Move Offline Mirror Game “One Move” Partner Balance Game

Technique 3 Hanbo Kamae and Strikes Muso Dori
